TRICKS OF THE TRADE: River Rock Tile

November 29, 2010

River rock/pebble stone, tile installations are difficult and require special grouting techniques depending on the river rock material selected.  The grout joints in River rock applications often fall outside the widths/depths recommended for many types of grout, including Urethane Grout.  Failure to recongnize and account for this fact can lead to grout failure if proper installation techniques and the appropriate precautions are not taken.

One of the most challenging types of river rock tiles to grout is sheet-mounted type show above.  When setting this type of tile, the installer must follow the tile and setting material manufacturers’ instructions and ensure that all missing stones are replaced during the installation process.  The use of waterproofing membranes or pre-sloped waterproof trays (instead of mud beds) is highly recommended.

StarGlass offers unlimited design potential for glass and metal tile.  Glass tile manufacturers have always desired a translucent grout that complements their products/  Cement and epoxy grouts can detract from a glass tile installation’s overall appearance by creating a harsh line that clashes with the tile’s natural beauty.  StarGlass, however, provides limitless design possibilities and actually enhances the look of glass tile by offering never-before-seen color and visual possibilities.
